When Did Applications Open?
College applications for Fall 2026 officially opened on August 1st for most major platforms, including:
Common App (over 1,000 schools)
Coalition with Scoir
ApplyTexas, UC Apply, and other state portals
Individual college websites
What You Should Be Doing This Week
Even if you’re not ready to submit yet, now is the perfect time to get ahead. Here’s what you can start doing today:
Finalize Your College List
Make sure it’s balanced with reach, match, and safety schools—and aligns with your interests and budget.
Start Your Personal Statement
Choose a Common App prompt (or UC PIQ topic) and draft your main college essay.
Know Which Schools Need Supplemental Essays
Create a doc or spreadsheet to track all the “Why Us” and short answer questions.
Request Letters of Recommendation
Ask teachers early—before their inboxes fill up. Be clear and polite, and include your resume or brag sheet.
Create a College App Calendar
Mark key deadlines (ED, EA, RD) and set your own internal dates for drafts, reviews, and submission.
What Not to Do Right Now
Avoid these common mistakes that cause panic later:
Waiting until senior year starts to begin essays
Sending last-minute rec requests
Underestimating time needed for supplements
Applying without researching each college’s unique requirements
Suggested August Timeline
Week | Focus |
---|---|
Week 1 | Pick your essay prompt and brainstorm ideas |
Week 2 | Finalize college list + ask for rec letters |
Week 3 | Draft personal statement and outline supplements |
Week 4 | Revise + edit main essay, start final application inputs |
Feeling Behind? You’re Not. But Start Now.
You might feel like everyone else is further along—but the truth is, most students are just getting started now too.
Starting in August gives you breathing room and time to reflect—not rush.
