The 2026-27 FAFSA Is Here!
A beta version of the new FAFSA is now open for early access. Here’s everything you need to know to get a head start on your financial aid application.
What’s Different This Year?
Beta is the Real Deal
Submissions during the beta phase are valid. If you file now, you won’t need to refile in October. You’re one and done!
A Simpler Form
With fewer questions and more direct IRS data retrieval, the application process is designed to be faster and more user-friendly.
No “Sibling Discount”
The aid formula no longer gives a benefit for having multiple children in college simultaneously. Families should budget for this change.
Your FAFSA Timeline
August–September 2025
Limited beta access opens for select students and schools. This is the early bird window!
October 1, 2025
The FAFSA fully opens to the public. This is the official launch day for all applicants.
January–March 2026
Critical priority deadlines for many states and colleges. Filing by these dates maximizes your aid potential.
June 30, 2026
The final federal deadline for submitting the 2026-27 FAFSA. Don’t wait this long!
Don’t Miss State Deadlines!
Many states have priority deadlines that are much earlier than the federal one. Missing them can mean missing out on thousands in grants. This chart shows how much earlier some state deadlines are.
Your 4-Step Action Plan
- Create or find your FSA ID: Both the student and at least one parent need an account. Get this done first at studentaid.gov.
- Gather your documents: Have your 2024 tax returns, W-2s, bank statements, and Social Security Numbers ready to go.
- Check ALL priority deadlines: Look up the specific deadlines for your state and every college on your list.
- File ASAP: Whether in the beta phase or on October 1, file as soon as you can to avoid site traffic and secure your place in line for aid.
What This Means For You
High School Seniors
Filing early is critical, especially for Early Action/Decision applications. Getting your FAFSA submitted helps colleges create your financial aid package sooner.
Returning College Students
Log in with your FSA ID and update your income information. If your family’s financial situation has changed, be prepared to file an appeal with your school’s aid office.
Parents
Remember to create your own FSA ID. With the sibling discount gone, use the Student Aid Index (SAI) estimator to understand your potential contribution and compare net costs.
